Israeli authorities have proposed establishing a new section at the Western Wall where men and women can pray together, a groundbreaking initiative that would mark a significant victory by liberal streams of Judaism in their long quest for recognition.
In 1775 the continental Congress asked the colonies to join in prayer for wisdom as they build a new nation. In 1787 Benjamin Franklin implored the framers of the Constitution to pray for guidance. President John Adams declared “a day of solemn humiliation, fasting and prayer.” President Abraham Lincoln proclaimed a day of national fasting and prayer, saying “to confess our national sins and to pray to the God that made us.”
AUSTIN, Texas — Texas Gov. Rick Perry has invited the nation’s governors to join him in a prayer day to seek God’s guidance to deal with the problems facing America.
The day for prayer and fasting is planned for Aug. 6 in Houston and is sponsored by the American Family Association, a Christian advocacy group. The organization’s website says the event is intended to be a non-denominational, apolitical, Christian prayer service.

A new group in Jamestown seeks to unite members of the community in prayer.
The Jamestown Community Prayer group is nondenominational and doesn’t require membership, church affiliation or even a dress code, organizers said. It’s just a way for concerned members of the community to speak to God together.
Organizers Greg and Mary Allen established the group to give the community an opportunity to pray about various issues and organizations in Jamestown like education, government and families. It’s not a political forum though, Greg said, but only quiet prayer and a way to ask God for help.
“Anything good can be improved upon,” he said, saying Jamestown is already a good place to live and raise a family.
