ST. LOUIS (AP) — Prices for major crops climbed Thursday as a U.N. agency said food costs are now at their highest point since the agency began tracking them 20 years ago.
Global prices have surged 2.2 percent just in the past month, according to the U.N.’s Food and Agriculture Organization in Rome. The FAO’s index, which measures the price of staple food items and big commercial crops like corn and soybeans, reached its highest level since 1990.
The new gold rush is on.
The price of the precious metal is soaring, hitting a record $1,119 an ounce on Wednesday — confounding market analysts who thought there was no way gold would remain so expensive when it first cracked the unheard-of $1,000 mark last year.

Crop prices jumped nearly 8 percent in October as rainy weather delayed harvests across the Midwest.
Farmers are still getting paid much less for their crops compared with a year ago, when global food shortages pushed grain prices to record highs. But the farm prices of corn, wheat and milk jumped this month, according to a report Friday from the Agriculture Department.

The directors of North Dakota’s state-owned flour mill gave its general manager a 4 percent raise after the mill reported a $9.7 million annual loss, marking the second straight year its ledgers were stained with red ink.
North Dakota’s Industrial Commission, which oversees the Grand Forks mill and the Bank of North Da-kota in Bismarck, blamed vol-atile grain prices for the loss.

WASHINGTON (AP) — U.S. consumer prices were flat in July as energy costs retreated following a big surge in June. Over the past 12 months, prices dropped the most in nearly six decades as the recession and lower energy costs kept a lid on inflation.
