Absentee dispute clouds recount finish

Only a final stack of ballots stands in the way of declaring a winner in Minnesota’s U.S. Senate recount. But like much of the prolonged recount between Republican Sen. Norm Coleman and Democrat Al Franken, it may not be that simple. The secretary of state’s office today will start counting 953 absentee ballots local election officials and the two campaigns agreed were mistakenly rejected and should be tallied.

Nething’s victory grows by 2 votes

Secretary of State Al Jaeger said Sen. David Nething’s re-election victory was has grown from eight to 10 votes. Jaeger said Republican incumbent Nething, Jamestown, beat Democratic challenger John Grabinger by a count of 2,982 to 2,972.

Nething keeps Senate seat

Dave Nething will return to the North Dakota Senate. The 42-year veteran of the Legislature eked out an 8-vote victory over Democratic challenger John Grabinger after a recount Friday. The recount for the District 12 Senate seat was the only mandatory recount in North Dakota after the Nov. 4 general election.

Nething wins District 12 Senate seat by 8 votes

Dave Nething retains his seat as District 12 senator after the completion of a recount Friday. The final results gave Nething, a Republican who has served in the Senate since 1966, an 8-vote margin over Democratic challenger John Grabinger. The final results determined 2,974 votes for Nething and 2,966 votes for Grabinger after the recount committee had ruled on 105 ballots challenged by either Johnson or the representatives of the candidates.

District 12 Senate race recount begins in Jamestown

About 3,800 absentee and early voting ballots in the District 12 Senate race were inspected Friday by Noel Johnson, election administrator for Stutsman County, Joel Larson, representing Republican Sen. Dave Nething and Jamie Selzer, executive director of the North Dakota Democratic Party representing challenger John Grabinger. The recount started Friday morning.

Recount Friday

The closely contested race for the Senate seat from District 12 will enter its final stage at 9 a.m. Friday in the meeting rooms in the basement of the Law Enforcement Center in James-town. The process of recounting the more than 6,000 ballots cast in the race between incumbent Dave Nething and challenger John Grabinger will get under way at that time. Nething led Grabinger by 10 votes on election night and by 12 votes after the Canvassing Board met.
