As an aficionado of fine rifles, one would have had to experience the dreadful period from 1965 through the 1970s, when Winchester quit making the original Model 70 rifle, slapping together a push-feed disaster made of stamped parts and impressed checkering. Winchester’s move to cheaper manufacturing methods created a firestorm of scorn for the company that lasted decades. (To its credit, Winchester now makes a Model 70 that critics say is an even better rifle than the pre-’64 rifle!)
Fargo police say the accidental discharge of a rifle Monday night in a south Fargo apartment building is a reminder of why firearms shouldn’t be cleaned inside apartments.
