FARGO (AP) — They have friends around the country who have lost their jobs or had to take a cut in pay. That's why Gene Taylor, Lynn Dorn and Brian Faison are thankful they are able to offer raises to their coaches at North Dakota State and the University of North Dakota.
Although not begrudging the presidents of the state’s colleges and universities a pay hike, it would seem given their substantial salaries and the Legislature’s generosity with tax dollars to higher ed’s budget, that the chancellor and the North Dakota Board of Higher Education would at least parcel out those salary increases based on merit.
For now, North Dakota lawmakers are backing 5 percent raises for state employees. But pay differences between the House and Senate are contentious enough to give legislative negotiators plenty of work in the 2009 session’s closing days.

After months of negotiations as well as an impasse hearing, the Kensal Public School Board and Kensal teachers came to a base salary agreement of $25,675 Wednesday.
The two parties met after The North Dakota Fact Finders Commission reviewed arguments of both Kensal teachers and the Kensal School Board at an impasse hearing May 20. The commission recommended raising the base salary from $23,150 to $26,250 for the 2008-2009 school year.
