Cinderella Fresno tips North Carolina

Alan Ahmady hit the go-ahead single in the fifth inning, five Fresno State pitchers combined to hold North Carolina scoreless for all but one inning and the upstart Bulldogs continued to surprise Tuesday night with a 5-3 victory in the College World Series. The Bulldogs (44-29), the first No. 4 regional seed to reach the CWS, have won two straight in Omaha to take control of Bracket 2. They need one more win to reach the best-of-three championship round that starts next Monday.

A Fresno State team that struggled to make it to the College World Series rewarded itself with an easy win in its first game here. Danny Muno, Alan Ahmady and Jordan Ribera launched three-run homers and the Bulldogs’ amazing postseason run continued Sunday with a stunning 17-5 victory over Rice. ASU, A&M set for title tilt

At 5 feet tall and a slender 100-or-so pounds, Jackie Vasquez wasn’t known for hitting home runs. Until she put Arizona State in the Women’s College World Series finals with one swing. Vasquez hit a three-run home run after slugger Kaitlin Cochran was hit with a pitch, leading the Sun Devils to a 3-1 win Sunday against Alabama and its first chance to play for the national championship.

Lewis-Clark State forces second title game

Lewis-Clark State was on the verge of wrapping up another NAIA baseball championship Friday night. The Warriors (57-7) rallied to beat top-seeded Lee, Tenn., Thursday night 7-6 to force a decisive second championship game on Friday. At press time, the Warriors led the Flames 5-3 in the eighth inning.

NAIA World Series will remain in Lewiston

The NAIA World Series is staying in Lewiston, Idaho. In a move that had been anticipated, the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics announced that Lewis-Clark State will continue to host the event through at least 2012. The tournament has been held in Lewiston for the past nine years.

Bellevue bounced out of NAIA World Series

Bellevue University was eliminated from the NAIA World Series on Monday in Lewiston, Idaho. The Bruins were defeated by Embry-Riddle (Fla.) 6-1 in a loser-out game. On Saturday, Embry-Riddle eliminated Jamestown College 10-5.

Victory just out of reach

Hits weren’t the problem for the Jamestown College baseball team in their NAIA World Series opener on Friday — they got 11 of them. Getting them at the right time was. The Jimmies left 11 runners on base — including seven in scoring position — in a 7-5 loss to Spring Arbor (Mich.) in the opening game of the World Series in Lewiston, Idaho.
