SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. (AP) — A decorated Army soldier recovering from injuries suffered in a suicide bombing in Afghanistan has been shot at his homecoming party, and family members say he's paralyzed and in critical condition.
Holding American flags and wiping away tears, hundreds of people from across the Upper Midwest paid their final tribute Saturday to Sgt. Matthew Harmon, a U.S. Army diesel mechanic who made the ultimate sacrifice for his country.

GOODRIDGE, Minn. — As the hearse bearing Army Cpl. James Norman Sund’s flag-draped coffin pulled up outside Faith Lutheran Church here more than an hour before Tuesday’s funeral was to begin, dozens of people lined the street, waiting.
Veterans in their service caps saluted. Mothers covered their hearts and clutched the hands of children, who themselves clutched small American flags.

Maj. Thomas Beyer died more than 40 years ago when the plane he was piloting was lost in the jungles and violence of the Vietnam War.
He returned home to Fargo Wednesday night to gently falling snow.
Family and friends were also there when a plane carrying Beyer’s casket landed at Hector International Airport about 9 p.m.
Among them was Beyer’s sister, Libby Schoemehl, who traveled from California to be with her brother one last time.

A chartered jet descended from a cloudless blue sky to bring the body of Army Pfc. Ryane Clark home Thursday. Clark was killed Oct. 4 while deployed to Afghanistan.
The twin-engine Falcon 20, owned by Kalitta Charters of Ypsilanti, Mich., touched down at Willmar Municipal Airport at 12:25 p.m. Clark’s body was accompanied by two services members from the Army and Marines. Among the dozens of people at the terminal were 38 members of the Patriot Guard Riders who provided a color guard in front of the terminal.
