A moment seized motivates: YouTube basketball sensation to speak at autism fundraiser

Four minutes, 19 seconds is not a lot of time, but that is exactly how long Jason McElwain needed to prove that sometimes dreams do come true. Six years ago, McElwain — who has high-functioning autism — was a senior student manager for the Greece Athena boys basketball team in Greece, N.Y., a suburb of Rochester. He could be seen at every game wearing a white dress shirt and a black tie, patrolling the team’s bench dispensing cups of water and cheers to the players.

St. James Basilica in Jamestown will host national speaker, author and cartoonist Jason Kotecki from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Wednesday. He has been invited to share an intergenerational program for ages 5 to 105. It will be a funny and uplifting look at how to stress less and have more fun by uncovering a more childlike faith. Kotecki will share key strategies for destressing life and finding a happy and manageable balance — and every day faith.

Hawkins speaking on L’Amour

Reese Hawkins, friend and admirer of the late Louis L’Amour, will make a rare appearance Sunday afternoon to share his personal stories of the frontier author. Hawkins, 93, said he’s not getting out much anymore, although he still lives on his own. He said his presentation Sunday at St. John’s Lutheran Church is the result of encouragement by the one of the church’s pastors, the Rev. Harlan Kaden.

Speaker on autism to be in Grand Forks

Rep. David Monson, R-Osna-brock, will be the speaker of the House in the 2009 Legislature and the House will also have a new slate of majority leaders. As ex-pected, Rep. Al Carlson, R-Fargo, was elected House majority lead-er without op-position, and Rep. Don Vigesaa, R-Cooperstown, became the first new assistant House majority leader in 10 years. He also ran without opposition.
