Man makes brief escape from NDSH unit

A faulty electric fence may have helped a patient make a brief escape Monday from the North Dakota State Hospital’s Secure Services Unit. Vance Mey, 18, originally from the Williston, N.D., area, scaled the fence about 9:30 a.m. Monday and was captured about half an hour later.

Yabut new medical director at State Hospital

The Governing Body of the North Dakota State Hospital met the new medical director during its regular quarterly meeting Monday. Dr. Eduardo Yabut accepted the position after working about eight years as medical director at South Central Human Service Center in Jamestown.

N.D. State Hospital psychologist returns to visit for anniversary

A former staff psychologist who worked at the North Dakota State Hospital in the 1960s and again in the 1980s was surprised by some of the things he saw when he returned for the 125th anniversary of the facility this week. “We visited some of the wards yesterday and were surprised by the low number of residents,” said Dr. Phil Stack, currently of Spring Hill, Tenn. “There are more staff than patients now.” He also noted many changes to the grounds and facilities.

Mental Health Walk Thursday at NDSH

A walk for mental health will be held in conjunction with the 125th anniversary celebration at the North Dakota State Hospital on Thursday. The walk will cover about a mile in distance from the hospital campus to the State Hospital Cemetery.

The date of the North Dakota State Hospital picnic was incorrect in a brief on A3 in Tuesday’s Sun. The All Hospital Picnic for staff of the hospital is at noon May 7. The picnic is not open to the public. The event is part of the hospital’s 125th Anniversary Celebration.

125 years: N.D. State Hospital notes changes as it celebrates anniversary this week

When the 125th anniversary celebration of the North Dakota State Hospital kicks off this week it will celebrate not only a long and colorful history but, according to Alex Schweitzer, State Hospital superintendent, the pride the employees take in their work. “It is and always has been a tough job dealing with a whole variety of people with a variety of mental illnesses,” he said. “But the one thing I hear from employees present and past is the pride they have in their work.”
