Campaign collects 920 shoe boxes

More than 920 shoe boxes filled with toys, school supplies and other items were dropped off at churches and other facilities around Jamestown last week. Temple Baptist Church in Jamestown was a collection site. Last week was National Collection Week for Operation Christmas Child, and the gift-filled shoe boxes are now in the process of being shipped to needy children around the world.

Temple hosting Bible seminar

Temple Baptist Church, 1545 Fourth Ave. N.W., is hosting a “Walk Thru the New Testament” seminar on Oct. 10. Dr. Bill Marty, professor of Bible at Moody Bible Institute, Chicago, will lead the seminar. Session one begins during worship (either 8:30 or 10:45 a.m.). People are encouraged to bring a bag lunch. Session two is from 1 to 5:30 p.m. Cost is $20 per person if registered and paid by Oct. 4 (The cost is $25/person after Oct. 4.).

Temple starting AWANA ministry

Temple Baptist Church, 1545 Fourth Ave. N.W., Jamestown, is beginning its AWANA (Approved Workmen Are Not Ashamed) year at 6:15 p.m. Wednesday, with a kickoff/registration/campfire night. AWANA is a ministry for children, kindergarten through grade six. Children meet in age groups to memorize Bible verses, play games, sing songs, hear Bible stories/object lessons and receive awards. AWANA meets from 6:15 to 8 p.m. Wednesdays. 8 All children, kindergarten through grade six, are invited. Contact the church office (952-0822) for more information.

New Hope holding service at Temple

New Hope Free Lutheran Church will hold a worship service at 7 p.m. Sunday at 1545 Fourth Ave. N.W. Jamestown (the Temple Baptist Church facility). A time of fellowship will follow worship. The public is welcome to attend. New Hope Free Lutheran Church is a new congregation affiliated with the Association of Free Lutheran Congregations. Temple Baptist Church will have a cookout, silent auction, dunk tank and other games starting at noon Sunday to raise funds for Aaron Aziz, a TBC member who will spend a one-year internship with AIM Air in Nairobi, Kenya.

Jaspers presenting sermon series

The Rev. Randy Jaspers will begin a sermon series Sunday at Temple Baptist Church titled “Life Stranger than Fiction,” based on the book of Judges. The book of Judges includes stories of deceit, low self-image, murder, fear, pride, rash decision-making, presumption, anger mismanagement, killing of relatives, sexual immorality and other behaviors. The story “Construction begins on new Baptist church” on page A7 in Friday’s Sun contained two errors. Temple Baptist Church’s new building will seat 400 people and the average worship service attendance at the present church is 190 people.

Construction begins on new Baptist church

Temple Baptist Church broke ground Sunday on construction of an estimated $2 million building just north of the James Valley Career and Technology Center in Jamestown. If it goes according to plan, the new church should be open and serving the Temple Baptist congregation in 15 to 18 months. Maranatha Custom Churches in Jamestown is the designer and the general contractor on the project.

Virginia Beach Buddhist monks seek to keep temple location

A group of Buddhist monks could lose permission to use a $1 million brick ranch home as their temple. In a 6-4 vote last week, Virginia Beach Planning Commissioners recommended that the monks shut down the Buddhist Education Center of America Inc. in rural Virginia Beach. The City Council will take up the issue next.
