A group of 29 people with members from every local law enforcement branch collectively ran 29 miles Thursday for an event they hold near and dear.
“I’m a big supporter of Special Olympics, it’s one of the things I do,” said Ben Kennelly, trooper with the North Dakota Highway Patrol. “It’s a good time especially when you get this many people together.”
Olympic officials have called for an end to international torch relays in the aftermath of a year that spawned protests around the globe before the Beijing Games.
Gilbert Felli, executive director of the International Olympic Committee, said Thursday that relays would be limited to within the Olympic country beginning next year in Vancouver. IOC officials decided there was too much risk in taking them worldwide.
Volunteers from the Jamestown law enforcement community and others took part in the torch run for Special Olympics, but without a torch.
The Jamestown group ran from the Bloom exit of Interstate 94 to Valley City. Along the way they met up with members of the Valley City law enforcement agencies to run through that community, said Kevin Arthaud, organizer of the event.
