Local walkers will have the unique opportunity to help grant children’s wishes while they walk at the upcoming Indoor 5K Walk for Wishes 2012, a fundraiser for Make-A-Wish Foundation of North Dakota.
Three or four children from the Jamestown area who face life-threatening illnesses are granted wishes through the foundation every year, referred to the program by a doctor.
Sisters and mothers wept at a community park Saturday while children giggled and chased each other in the background.
It’s was a bittersweet day, organizers said.
About 200 people trekked the 3-mile course of the first Out of Darkness walk at McElroy Park in Jamestown. Organizers hope to make it an annual event.
Ten years ago to the day, young and old gathered in Jamestown to show support and remember an event that impacted millions across the world.
“Two planes, they crashed into two of the tallest buildings,” said 7-year-old Karl Ames while taking part in the Patriot Day Freedom Walk.
Matt Finck was an athletic 18-year-old who loved to run and worked best with his hands.
Professionals labeled him a genius, but Matt struggled in school. As homework, he’d write his book reports on how-to manuals instead of novels and rather than math or science, his favorite class was shop. Matthew had received the 2011 Ford/AAA Student Auto Skills Challenge Award and, dubbed “my inventor,” by his mother, Karen, Matt planned to design driverless cars and vehicles of the future one day.
The sixth Annual WALKRUN with Christ begins Saturday morning at Ave Maria Village, 501 19th St. N.E., near Jamestown Reservoir.
For the avid runners, there are 5K and 10K runs over a course with uphill and downhill running. For those who like a slower tempo, there is the 5K walk race. There is the Family/Individual Walk for people not interested in competing.
Dusty roads, rolling plains, funny accents, breathtaking landscapes and hometown hospitality are the norm for most residents, but these are the things a band of young out-migrated Bismarck natives hope to encounter as they return to their homeland to hike halfway across the state and dig deeper into the uniqueness of the place they once called home.
