The sounds of hammers and saws may be more prevalent in Jamestown this construction season. The number of building permits issued or in process is nearly double the number from last year, according to Gary Klundt, building inspector for Jamestown.

Memorial Day ceremonies set in area

Memorial Day will be marked Monday with ceremonies and observances in and around the Jamestown area. The Jamestown Memorial Day program begins at 9 a.m. Monday at the Knights of Columbus Hall. Charlie Kourajian is the master of ceremony. Paul Frederick Behle, a member of the Jamestown Toastmasters, is the guest speaker. The Rev. Shawn Bowman, pastor of Victory Lutheran Church, will provide the invocation.

North Dakota Veterans Cemetery site of program Monday

The 2013 Memorial Day ceremony at the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery begins at noon Monday. This annual event honors all deceased American servicemen and women and is free to the public. The theme is “Remembering through the Decades,” in recognition of the 40 and 60 years since the end of the Vietnam and Korean Wars, respectfully.

N.D. Supreme Court disciplines lawyer-lawmaker

A Grand Forks Democratic state senator who is an attorney has been reprimanded and fined by North Dakota’s Supreme Court for failing to adequately represent a client in a divorce-related case from 2007-2010. Connie Triplett said had been suffering from depression during that time but her condition has improved.

Letter to the editor: Little done for small businesses in session

Members of the Republican Party have suggested over and over that they were able to provide real relief and do what’s best for North Dakotans. It’s become increasingly difficult to decipher if members of the GOP leadership believe their own rhetoric, or if they are holding tight to it in order to convince the rest of us that their imprudent priorities and lack of concern for the people in our state are anything more than smoke and mirrors.

It seems as if our city’s leaders are so bogged down in executive sessions, quibbling over who provides water and sewer service to new developments, spending thousands of dollars for consultants and more such Sisyphean pursuits that the needs of Jamestown’s taxpayers and those who come here for business, recreation or personal care, thereby paying our high sales taxes, are ignored.

Throughout our frigid winters, not many days go by that North Dakotans don’t think about the start of summer. In our state, Memorial Day weekend is the unofficial kickoff of summertime. North Dakotans will spend this weekend with friends and family, barbequing and discussing their plans for the coming months.

High school seniors often speak of going out on a high note, but that’s of less significance to Jamestown’s Alison Allmer. She’s perfectly content with what she achieved in five years as a distance runner for the Blue Jays.

Demons nip Jays

Anthony Cook made it interesting, that’s for sure. The Jamestown High School senior drilled a double to the gap in the top of the seventh, but Bismarck High’s Nate Dinga put a cap on a two-hit shutout by forcing a foul out to first base in the Demons’ 1-0 win Friday at Memorial Ballpark.

Kellemon Hinton’s burst on his opening leap in the preliminaries of the Class B long jump looked to be a good one. But it was not to be, as the Ellendale sophomore stepped over the foul line, negating the effort.

The Blue Jays will play for a trip to state today. After dropping its opening game to Bismarck Century, Jamestown High School defeated Turtle Mountain 14-2 in loser-out play at the West Region softball tournament at Hillcrest on Thursday.

Big weekend for speed

They raced 1-2-3 in line, trading the lead a whopping 15 times over the final, frantic 75 laps. All three drivers had a last-lap plan in mind when they zipped past the white flag, and it was Takuma Sato who acted first with a bold move for the win.

Riverwood proves tricky

Unfamiliarity with Riverwood was a challenge for the Blue Jays on Friday. Poor weather didn’t help either. Scores were up across the board as Jamestown finished fifth on a course no JHS golfer had played in three years.
