Letter to the editor: Measure will protect N.D. from creating abortion rigthts

There have been some fears and misunderstandings by some people regarding North Dakota’s proposed human life amendment. The passage of this amendment will not impact the use of advanced directives and end-of-life care. The North Dakota Constitution already guarantees our right to determine end-of-life health care decisions.

Also, the human life amendment will not impact in vitro fertilization treatment services in North Dakota. The North Dakota Legislature determines any regulations of in vitro fertilization treatment.

North Dakota already has several pro-life laws to protect women and children. These laws include ensuring that women are given full information prior to an abortion, making sure parents are notified if their daughter is seeking an abortion and prohibiting partial-birth abortion.

You may be wondering why this amendment is needed. Activists in several other states have convinced judges to create a right to abortion. The human life amendment will give needed protection against such attacks in North Dakota.

Please join me in voting “yes” on the human life amendment this November.
