Letter to the editor: Landlords show greed when rents are raised very high

I’ve been disappointed to hear how quickly and how far rents in North Dakota, and even in Jamestown, are rising. I’m all for landlords making a good profit on their investments, and they should raise the rents to keep up with inflation and the cost of doing business.

However, when rents are raised so high that longtime tenants can no longer afford to keep a roof over their heads, that sounds like greed to me. In western North Dakota, a landlord was reported to have raised rents by 300 percent.

Recently I heard that North Dakotans are some of the most religious people in the country and rank No. 1 in the percentage of churchgoers. I’m guessing that many, if not most, of the landlords in North Dakota attend church. I find that it is impossible to understand how they reconcile their business actions with Jesus’ message. Maybe they can explain it to me.
