Letter to the editor: People used to dress up for Saturday night
Reviving downtown is a good idea which time has come. It will not probably be as nice as it was. That is, people no longer want to dress better for an evening in downtown. Saturday evening was considered a special event, even to dress up for.
Big cities had a big gala in the evening. While living near Chicago, I often went to downtown to view the crowd. Everyone dressed up to see the people all dressed up and some place to go to nightclubs lounge, theater and taverns. With a mild southwest wind there would be the smell of the stockyards “cattle cologne perfume” and slang for dress-up clothing was “glad rags.”
