Letter to the editor: The cost of tyranny haunts us today
“If angels were to govern men, neither external nor internal controls on government would be necessary.” The wisdom of James Madison some 230 years ago. “In framing a government which is to be administered by men over men, the great difficulty lies in this: you must first enable the government to control the governed; and in the next place oblige it to control itself.”
How sorry a state when the worst fears of the Founding Fathers have become reality in recent years - a government that has mutated to a form of tyranny by deliberate actions of our own citizens. The foremost fear of the founders: the tyranny of King George could be replaced by a new government of their own design to be administered in future years by men and not angels.
As we have seen in the IRS scandal where people were able to turn the authority and force of a massive agency against our own citizens; tyranny in the form of a government agency created by our Congress which enabled political zealots to become malevolent, unsupervised, rogue operatives for a political party.
The cost of this aberration - this tyranny - haunts us again today. We are now very aware that other agencies may be infected. Is it possible that the FBI and the Department of Justice may have people who are political zealots with the goal of using the power of the agency to bring their party to control Congress, and their person to power as president? Is a one-party system their goal? A sure path to tyranny? Is it possible that our straight-arrow FBI or DOJ could be infected? Are we so naïve that we look on without question?
