'Medora Musical' auditions set at Concordia

The search is on for talented individuals to perform in the 2009 "Medora Musical." Auditions will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday on the campus of Concordia College in Moorhead, Minn. The auditions will take place at the music building in the Howard Rehearsal Hall on a first-come, first-served basis. Sign-up will begin at 1 p.m. StageWest Entertainment will be casting for male and female Burning Hills Singers.

"We look for performers who are able to sing, dance and light up the stage," said Curt Wollan, producer of the "Medora Musical."

People auditioning should bring a black and white, 8-by-10 glossy photo, along with a typed resume that includes contact information. Performers must be prepared to sing two contrasting songs that show off their vocal range, preferably country-western songs or songs from a western-themed musical. All music must be memorized and the accompaniment music must be in the correct key and easy to follow for the provided piano accompanist. People auditioning may sing to a karaoke tape/CD instead. For the dance portion of the audition, performers should wear or bring clothes and shoes that are comfortable for dancing. The "Medora Musical" is a professional musical production, so people auditioning are expected to dress professionally. Western attire is acceptable, since this follows the theme of the musical.

If selected, performers must be available from May 8 through Sept. 6. The "Medora Musical" will be performed each night at 8:30 MDT from June 3 through Sept. 6. Performers receive a weekly salary, plus private room and board for the season. Twelve singer/dancers (The Burning Hills Singers), six musicians (The Coal Diggers), a host and several variety and comedy acts are hired each season.

"Country musicians may also audition," said producer, Curt Wollan. "And theater technicians may stop by to be interviewed." Auditions will also be held in downtown Minneapolis at 6 p.m. Monday at the Hennepin Center for the Arts (Sixth and Hennepin).

The "Medora Musical" is an outdoor, western musical variety show dedicated to the memory of Theodore Roosevelt and the North Dakota Badlands he called home. The production is held in the 2,852-seat Burning Hills Amphitheatre. Medora is located in southwest North Dakota and is gateway to Theodore Roosevelt National Park.
