New Arts Center director has background in orchestras
The Jamestown Fine Arts Association Board has hired a replacement for Cyndi Wish, the director of the Arts Center.
L a r r y Kopp, of E m l e n - ton, Pa., will start Monday, June 26, and be introduced to the board at the Arts Center’s annual meeting on Thursday, June 29, according to Robert Toso, chair of the board’s search committee.
Kopp said Monday he thought the Arts Center would be a good fit given his experience in running symphony orchestras. He is currently the manager of All Saints Camp, a summer camp in Emlenton run by the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the United States of America. He was the executive director of the Ridgefield Symphony Orchestra in Ridgefield, Conn., before taking the job running the summer camp.
Kopp said he is impressed with how much community involvement there is with the Arts Center.
“I love the mission of the Arts Center,” he said. “I love all the programs they are doing and they are doing great things for the community.”
Kopp said he grew up in a small town, one smaller than Jamestown, and has been searching for a position where he can use his experience in running a nonprofit organization and in the arts.
“I’ve been looking for a position in the arts in a small town,” he said.
Kopp said he is excited about working with the Arts Center staff and moving to Jamestown.
“I got to see Jamestown when I came there for an interview,” he said. “Jamestown is a lovely community.”
Toso said the committee conducted a national search and about 20 people applied for the director’s position. Five applicants were interviewed over the phone by the committee and two were invited to Jamestown for a final interview. He said the other finalist was a woman from Seattle, Wash.
“We would have been happy with either candidate,” Toso said. “Larry had a little more leadership experience.”
Toso said Kopp has a wide breadth of experience having run several arts organizations, including symphony orchestras. Kopp also served in an office in the U.S. Army.
“He had a nice mix of arts background and leadership,” he said.
Toso said Kopp will work with Wish for about a week as her last day with the Arts Center is June 30. He said the search committee wanted to get a new director hired before Wish left so she could offer her insights on running the Arts Center.
