Edie Wait of Country Politan Quilting is the Artist of the Month for July at Unison Bank.

Wait purchased her first sewing machine from a man who repaired used machines and sold them out of his garage. She wanted to make a quilt for her son for Christmas. That was back in 1997. Today, Wait still pieces quilt tops in between long-arm quilting for her customers and working at the North Dakota State Hospital.

Wait’s grandmother and mother both quilted. Wait said the quilting “bug” “has also bitten her sister, Bobbie Barnhardt, and nephew, Tyler Barnhardt.

Wait said she gets her inspiration for piecing quilt tops from the gang at Comforts of Home Quilting and More in Jamestown. When she needs inspiration for her long-arm quilting, Wait said she turns to her sister and mentor at Quilting for You in Washburn.

“Quilting is my therapy,” she said. “Remember, a pattern is only a guide ... use it as a starting point to make something uniquely you. Have fun, add your own personal touches and keep in mind there are no ‘quilt police.’”
