LaMoure songstress releases second album

John M. Steiner / The Sun Gwen Thielges shows her second and latest album of contemporary Christian music, “How Can I Stay Silent?”

Singer-songwriter Gwen Thielges of rural LaMoure has always loved music, and her latest album, “How Can I Stay Silent?” uses 10 new tunes to express that love —along with her love of God.

“It’s about relationship with Jesus, that’s what it’s all about,” Thielges said. “Hopefully, it helps (listeners) in their relationship and deepens it.”

Thielges, a stay-at-home mom, also currently teaches the childhood music education program Kindermusik once a week at the Church of the Nazarene preschool.

She earned a bachelor’s degree in vocal music education at Northern State University in Aberdeen, S.D.

She and her husband, Darren, have four children, age 19, 18, 16 and 13.

Thielges has been singing since she can remember, and she even wrote little songs as a child, long before she learned music theory at Northern State.

“Going into music while I was in college seemed like a natural thing,” Thielges said. “Throughout my 20s I started writing a lot more.”

She released her first CD, “Unfailing Love,” in 2006, after many family members and friends encouraged her to do so. She’s been working on her second CD since then, most avidly in the past few years.

That album, “How Can I Stay Silent?” features 10 new contemporary Christian songs written by Thielges — “songs that have come out of my faith and my relationship with Jesus,” she said. “Things I want to express to other people, and help them with their faith and inspire them.”

Many of the songs are meditative and prayerful, featuring Thielges’ soprano vocals and her own accompaniment on the piano.

On some tunes, Thielges is also accompanied by guitar — played by the album’s sound engineer Paul “Buck” Rasmussen — and a drum set.

“I have tried to expand on some of the songwriting techniques, (with) different style things and chord progression,” Thielges said of her second release. “Even lyrically, I’ve tried to progress a little bit.”

Usually her songwriting process begins with reading or hearing someone say a particular line or phrase that impacts her, she said. Those words will be in her head and a tune will come along to match them. Then she finishes creating the song with the rest of the words.

“There’ve been times I’ve read a certain (Bible) verse or heard a sermon … or it might be something someone said,” said Thielges, who grew up in the Methodist tradition, and now attends the Nazarene Church in LaMoure.

“How Can I Stay Silent?” is available for $13 at LaMoure Drug and Good Oil in LaMoure, as well as Tara’s Thrifty White and Sweets ‘N Stories in Oakes.

It’s also available for sale at and digitally on iTunes and
