Driver in July 18 crash dies

The driver of a truck that was rear-ended on July 18 in Grafton, N.D., died on Tuesday, according to the North Dakota Highway Patrol.

Michael Kubal, 56, Langdon, N.D., died from injuries sustained in the crash, the patrol said. His passenger, Franna Kubal, 54, also of Langdon, was injured.

Brian Bjerkness, 43, Cavalier, N.D., was travelling south in a 2014 GMC Sierra K1500 on U.S. Highway 81 less than a mile south of N.D. Highway 17, when the GMC rear-ended Kubal’s 1999 Dodge Ram 2500 with a utility trailer, pushing it off the roadway where it overturned.

Kubal and his passenger were wearing seat belts. The two were transported by Valley Ambulance & Rescue Service to Unity Medical Center in Grafton for medical treatment. Bjerkness was wearing a seat belt and was not injured.

Bjerkness was charged with a DUI following the crash, the patrol said.

Grafton Police and Fire departments and Walsh County Sheriff's Office also responded to the scene.
