Wahpeton man trying to be good Samaritan getting gas can off highway hit by another vehicle


FARGO — A 70-year-old man trying to be a good Samaritan has been seriously injured after a vehicle struck him while he was walking on state Highway 127 south of Wahpeton around 3 p.m. Monday, Aug. 7, the state Highway Patrol said.
Thomas Kiefer, Wahpeton, was taken to St. Francis Hospital in Breckenridge and then taken by helicopter to Essentia Hospital in Fargo. The driver who struck him, Myron Holthusen, 71, Wahpeton, was not injured.
According to the Patrol, Kiefer had stopped his car on the southbound shoulder of the highway about three miles south of Wahpeton, got out and walked onto the southbound lane to remove a gas can from the road.
Holthusen struck Kiefer while southbound in a Ford F150 pickup.
The Patrol said the crash remains under investigation.
