Pride of Dakota Harvest Showcase: Jamestown to host its first Pride of Dakota showcase this weekend
Jamestown will host the Pride of Dakota Jamestown Harvest Showcase this week at the Jamestown Civic Center, the first time the North Dakota Department of Agriculture has brought the showcase to this area.
The two-day event will include about 100 booths with vendors offering a variety of North Dakota-made products, from art and jewelry to food.
The Pride of Dakota program is administered by the Marketing and Information Division of the North Dakota Department of Agriculture. The program started in 1985 with 20 North Dakota companies taking part.
“Today, we have more than 500 North Dakota businesses that belong to the program,” said Doug Goehring, North Dakota agricultural commissioner.
Goehring said the Pride of Dakota program offered its first holiday showcases in the early 1990s. Harvest showcases were added about 10 years ago to provide additional marketing opportunities for members.
Goehring said city of Jamestown officials had approached the North Dakota Department of Agriculture a few years ago about having a Pride of Dakota Showcase in Jamestown.
“We are always looking for ways to promote the Pride of Dakota brand and provide more opportunities to the members for marketing of their businesses and products,” he said.
Goehring said the Pride of Dakota Advisory Council decided to add the Jamestown showcase after discussing the matter earlier this year. He said given the popularity of past showcase events around the state, they are hoping to draw 3,000 people to Jamestown over both days of the showcase.
Pam Fosse, Jamestown Civic Center director, said she sent a proposal to the state Department of Agriculture to have the Civic Center host a Pride of Dakota event a couple of years ago. She said the contract for the showcase was signed in June, but Civic Center staff have been working out details of the event since the beginning of the year.
“We were all excited when we learned Pride of Dakota was coming here to Jamestown,” she said. “Hopefully this will become an annual event for Jamestown.”
Fosse said she and her staff are hearing from a lot people from outside of Jamestown who plan to attend the event this weekend. She said vendors will start setting up on Friday, and she hopes people who attend the Jamestown showcase also attend the other Pride of Dakota events in other cities.
“Visiting one show is a just a taste of Pride of Dakota,” she said. “If you go to the other shows, you get the full flavor of Pride of Dakota.”
