Driver injured in crash with Amtrak train
A Larimore, N.D., man was injured Wednesday when his car struck a moving Amtrak train in Ramsey County, according to the North Dakota Highway Patrol.
The crash occurred at 6:25 a.m. when Ryan Larson, 20, was driving north in a 2004 Ford Taurus about 6 miles east of Devils Lake. The Taurus struck the side of two lead locomotives pulling the westbound Amtrak train 7, at the gravel road crossing of the BNSF Railway rail tracks, the patrol said.
The Taurus entered the ditch and overturned. Larson was transported by Lake Region Ambulance Service to CHI St. Alexius Health Devils Lake Hospital where he was treated for nonlife-threatening injuries.
An airbag was deployed but it was not known if Larson was wearing a seat belt, the patrol said.
No Amtrak passengers or crew were injured, the patrol said. The train sustained moderate damage to the locomotives but did not derail.
The crash remains under investigation by the patrol and BNSF police.
Devils Lake Rural Fire Department and Ramsey County Sheriff's Office also responded to the scene.
