Two teens die in weekend crash in southeast SD

VIBORG, S.D. – Two teenagers were killed and another seriously injured in a two-vehicle crash late Friday night west of Viborg in southeast South Dakota.

Names of the three teens involved are not being released pending notification of family members.

In the crash about 11:30 p.m, a 2002 Chevrolet Silverado pickup was northbound and a 2015 Dodge Dart was westbound when neither vehicle stopped at an uncontrolled intersection and the two collided, said the South Dakota Highway Patrol. Both vehicles came to rest in the northwest ditch.

Two people were pronounced dead at the scene – the 17-year-old passenger in pickup and the 19-year-old driver of the Dodge Dart.

The 17-year-old driver of the pickup sustained life-threatening injuries and was airlifted to a Sioux Falls hospital. Charges are pending against him.

Neither occupant in the pickup was wearing a seatbelt. The driver of the Dart was wearing a seatbelt.

The crash is under investigation by the patrol.
