Florida man pleads guilty to concert fraud in Iowa
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (AP) -- A Florida man has pleaded guilty to one count of mail fraud in a fake concert scheme in Iowa.
Federal prosecutors say Scott Elkins, of Tampa, Fla., admitted that he and others devised a plan to defraud people by promoting and selling tickets to a concert in Dubuque that wasn't going to happen. Elkins pleaded guilty on Tuesday in federal court in Cedar Rapids.
Prosecutors say Elkins mailed a package containing flyers, tickets and money orders for the concert to a radio station in Dubuque. Authorities say Elkins was involved in similar schemes in Indiana, Alabama, New Mexico, North Dakota, Texas and Ohio.
Elkins faces up to 20 years in prison and a $250,000 fine. Sentencing wasn't immediately set.
