UJ classes begin Aug. 27

University of Jamestown classes begin Aug. 27. Students will return to some updates.

Hansen Center Renovation

With the addition of the Harold Newman Arena on campus, the Hansen Center — which previously served as an athletic gym — is being renovated and repurposed as a student union type of space. It is called JHouse.

JHouse provides an environment for relaxation, social interaction, education and exchange of thoughts. Renovation will take place in two phases.

Phase one is currently underway. It will include a movie theater, study/engagement space and snack/drink options. Additionally, it will feature a social space designed to feel like a pub with pool, ping-pong, shuffleboard, air hockey, foosball, darts, and more.

Phase two will occur based on feedback from phase one. Additional updates will be made as needed.

Raugust Library Renovation

University of Jamestown's library is being renovated to include a Student Success Center. This space will be one central location that houses everything students need to succeed, both at the university and in life after graduation.

The space includes room for testing and group study, as well as international travel services, career services, tutoring, disability services and retention.

Mechanical Engineering Lab Construction

University of Jamestown's program already features a physics lab and an engineering computer lab — which has 25 new computers with 3D solid modeling software and software for computer programming, as well as a virtual reality station.

A new lab, the senior design lab, is currently under construction. This lab is being added to the Sorkness Center and will feature a machine shop. Four additional labs are in the planning and renovation process. These labs include material testing, fluid mechanics, electronics and instrumentation.

Upcoming Presidential Inauguration

Dr. Polly Peterson, who was named University of Jamestown president in February, will be officially inaugurated on Thursday, Sept. 27. The event is open to the public. Campus tours will run from 9 to 11 a.m., followed by a chapel service at 11 a.m. and lunch at noon. The inauguration ceremony will begin at 2 p.m. in the Harold Newman Arena, followed by a reception, social and dinner.
