Of the 34 cities in the state with populations higher than 1,500 people, Carrington — population 2,065 as of 2010 — ranked behind only Horace, Watford City and Stanley.

“I think it speaks volumes about the leadership of the community, from the school district to the city, to all the different organizations and businesses that are in the community,” said Don Frye, who has served as Carrington’s mayor for nearly 12 years. “It’s really about a team effort to make Carrington a great place to live and work.”

The rankings given by are based on five factors, four of which are measured by the U.S. Census — median home value, monthly homeowner costs, median household income and income change between 1999 and 2011.

The final factor is the city’s rating on, which in turn is based on its standardized testing scores.

While Carrington ranked highest of the cities in the region, other cities fared well too. Oakes was seventh, followed by Valley City at eighth and Jamestown at 12th.

Frye said the number of young people in Carrington is increasing.

“Our average age is actually going down, and that’s a good thing,” he said. “It means more young families in the community, and that’s just a really positive direction that we’re going.”

The community is continuing to work on addressing housing needs, particularly affordable housing, and on bringing new job opportunities to town, Frye indicated.

“We think we’ve done a lot of things the way they need to be done to make our community attractive,” Frye said, offering the updated movie theater and the local golf course as examples, as well as a recent addition to the school and the city’s infrastructure updates.

“It’s a great place to live and work and it’s centrally located in North Dakota,” Frye said.
