Professional fisherman Ted Takasaki will share his knowledge on catching walleye as part of the Sport & Recreation Show taking place this weekend.

The show will be open from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and noon to 4 p.m. Sunday at the Jamestown Civic Center. There is no admission charge.

Takasaki’s seminars on catching walleye using jigs are at 7 p.m. Friday and 9:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. Saturday. He will be stationed on the upper concourse on the south end of the Civic Center.

Takasaki, of Sioux Falls, S.D., said he has been fishing since he was a little kid.

“I competed in my first tournament in 1989,” he said.

Takasaki said he specializes in walleye but will fish for just about anything that swims.

“Every species has a different behavior, something unique about it. Each fish presents a challenge,” he said.

Takasaki has an engineering degree from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. In 1999 he became president of Lindy Fishing Tackle, a company that makes and sells fishing lures. He left the company in 2008. Takasaki said the company doubled its revenues and quadrupled profits during his tenure. He said he knew he was ready to go out on his own as a professional fisherman when his fishing business income exceeded how much he was making as president at Lindy Fishing Tackle.

Takasaki is a competitor on the FLW Walleye Tour and the Professional Walleye Trail (PWT).  He won the PWT Classic Championship in 1998 and the PWT Top Gun Angler Award in 1992.

Lynn Lambrecht, sales manager for Ingstad Family Media, the show’s sponsor, said the Jamestown Civic Center will again be filled with booths, displays and demonstrations this weekend during the Sport & Recreation Show.

“We have at least 100 booth spaces coming in. The upper concourse is full,” she said.

Boats and recreational vehicles occupy all of the space on the ground floor.

In addition to many local vendors, Lambrecht said there will be booths and display areas for businesses around the state, like Just Motorsports of Minot.

The Black Hills Raptor Center returns again this year with a show about raptors. Lambrecht said the group brings a different raptor species each year. The shows are at 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday.

The Jamestown Optimist Club will host its spaghetti feed at 6 p.m. Friday in the Exchequer Room of the Civic Center. Kastet Auction Service will host a consignment auction at 10 a.m. Saturday featuring a wide variety of items.
