The Wednesday Club, the oldest women’s club in Jamestown, recently remodeled the Women’s Club Room, a community room available for rent at 210 3rd St. SW.

Rosemary McDougall, a Wednesday Club member, said the club was first formed in 1896 as a study group for women.

“They would review and discuss topics of the day and sometimes did skits,” she said.

The club continues to meet each month to hear a presentation on topics ranging from issues of the day to favorite books and movies.

It was a club member, Jessie Maud Bolinger, who gave the club money for a clubroom. McDougall said when Bolinger died in 1951 she left money in her will for the Wednesday Club to use to purchase a facility to provide a meeting place for all women’s clubs in Jamestown.

The Women’s Club Room building was purchased by the Wednesday Club in 1955, according to McDougall.

Since then the clubroom has been updated by the club. The most recent remodel was completed early in June. The club replaced all the furniture and carpeting and repainted the walls.

The room can hold 40 people, includes a kitchen and bathroom and is rented out at $25 for six-hour periods, from morning to noon, and noon to 6 p.m. McDougall said the room is available for any group to use.

“Our objective is to make the rent affordable so any group may use it,” she said.
