JPD warns city of sex offender

The Jamestown Police Department is warning residents that a convicted sex offender is living in Jamestown.

Roger Patrick McAvoy, 53, lives at Starlite Motel No. 1. He is described as a white male, 5 feet 7 inches tall, weighing 172 pounds with brown hair and brown eyes.

McAvoy has been assigned a high-risk assesment by the North Dakota Risk Level Committee, Office of the Attorney General.

McAvoy was convicted of sexual assault on a child in 1995 in Arapahoe County District Court in Colorado. Authorities said he repeatedly touched a 13-year-old girl and a 14-year-old girl inappropriately at a skating rink. He was sentenced to 90 days and eight years of supervised probation.

McAvoy was also convicted of gross sexual imposition in 1989 in Burleigh County Court in North Dakota. Authorities said he began a relationship with a 12-year-old girl that led to her being inappropriately touched. He was sentenced to four years.

McAvoy is currently on probation with North Dakota Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation’s Parole and Probation Services.

McAvoy is not wanted by police at this time and is currently serving the sentence imposed by the court. This notification is meant for public safety and not to increase fear in the community, nor should this information be used to threaten, assault or intimidate McAvoy. Attempts to harass, intimidate or threaten McAvoy or his family, landlords or employers will be turned over for prosecution. Printed handouts of McAvoy’s photo and demographics are available at the Jamestown Police Department.
