Jamestown woman charged with theft, lying to police

A 35-year-old James-town woman has been charged with theft and providing false information to law enforcement officers in a case related to Chad Gourneau.

Sarah Gray, 250 16th Ave. NE, was charged Monday in Southeast District Court in Jamestown with theft of property, a Class C felony, and with providing false information or report to law enforcement, a Class A misdemeanor. Her initial court appearance is scheduled for 1:15 p.m. today before Judge Thomas Merrick. She is free on bond.

According to court documents, Gray is an acquaintance of Gourneau, 38, 714 9th Ave. SE, who was previously charged with burglary and five counts of theft of property after he allegedly stole items from homes he was working in for Pioneer Plumbing and Heating of Jamestown.

Court documents state on June 17, Gourneau was brought in for questioning after the owner of one of the homes Gourneau had worked in noticed jewelry, silver coins and other valuables were missing between June 6-8. Gourneau allegedly said he had taken the items and offered to bring them to the Stutsman County Law Enforcement Center himself.

Law enforcement officers investigating the case suspected Gourneau was hiding other stolen items along with the items allegedly taken June 6-8. Gourneau took the officers to Gray’s house. Gray retrieved a jewelry box and other valuable items that were later determined to have been taken from the house in question on June 6-8.

Court documents state the officers noticed other items of value in the closet, which Gray allegedly said belonged to her grandfather. Gray later allegedly admitted all the items in the closet were jewelry and other valuables that Gourneau had taken from homes where he had worked.

The maximum penalty for a Class C felony is five years in prison and a $10,000 fine. A Class A misdemeanor has a maximum penalty of one year in jail and a $3,000 fine.
