Salvation Army falls short of $157,000 goal

Last-minute seasonal giving spiked considerably, but the Jamestown Salvation Army said it fell $40,000 short of its $157,000 campaign goal.

As of Jan. 3 donations to the Salvation Army from its annual Red Kettle Campaign, request for donations through the mail and other giving totaled $116,796, said Maj. Tim Nauta with the Jamestown Salvation Army. This is over $20,000 more than the $96,000 in donations received on Dec. 24 when red kettle donations totaled $56,000 of that amount, he said.

“We are short but we are better than where we were,” Nauta said. “We are still processing donations from Dec. 31 and the total could be higher.”

Having a $40,000 shortfall means the Salvation Army is just not going to be able to serve in the same capacity. The Salvation Army will still strive to offer all of the same services, but anticipated service needs could be cut as much as one-fourth to one-third, he said.

“That is pretty significant,” Nauta said. “I would think that what could get hit first is rent and utility assistance and that is unfortunate not to be able to help folks stay in their home.”

The $157,000 goal is what was needed for the Salvation Army’s 2017 operating budget, he said. Ongoing support to the Salvation Army will help make up the difference he said.

“We like to have the bulk of the dedicated fundraising done during the Christmas season, but any donation that is made now through the end of September will still help us meet our needs this year,” he said.

The giving campaign doesn’t go all year because the public would suffer from information overload, he said, and it may even hurt getting donations in the long run. Other assistance the Salvation Army receives includes 30 percent of sales from thrift-store sales in Jamestown, he said.

Online donations can still be made through http://salvationarmynorth.org/community/ jamestown. A tax-deductible check can also be mailed or delivered to the Salvation Army, 320 1st Ave. N. For more information, contact the office at 252-0290.
