N.D. National Guard deployments lowest since 2001
FARGO, N.D. (AP) -- North Dakota National Guard officials say only about a dozen of its members remain in overseas deployments, the lowest number since the 2001 terrorist attacks.
The Guard says about 1,000 of its soldiers and airmen were mobilized during 2010 and about 100 of its members participated in overseas training missions.
Kosovo was the primary destination for North Dakota Guardsmen, with about 650 people serving on a NATO peacekeeping mission. More than 100 members served in Afghanistan and 65 were sent to Iraq.
North Dakota Gov. Jack Dalrymple says the Guardsmen should be commended for their distinguished service, including those who helped respond to ice storms and flooding within the state.
