UPDATE: Fire doesn't appear suspicious as Wahpeton home seriously damaged

WAHPETON, N.D. - The cause of a fire that destroyed a detached garage and heavily damaged a home here Sunday, May 28, has been officially listed as undetermined by the state fire marshal, Wahpeton Fire Chief Joel Hermes said Monday night.

Hermes said the fire marshal investigated the garage and home at 217 11th Street N. on Monday and determined that the fire had started in the northeast corner of the garage. However, the fire marshal found nothing that appeared suspicious, Hermes said.

The fire call came in about 10:30 p.m. Sunday, and Hermes said strong northwest winds helped fan the flames.

In addition to the Wahpeton Fire Department, fire crews from Dwight and Breckenridge, Minn., assisted at the scene. Still, it took three hours to extinguish the blaze, Hermes said.

No one was injured in the fire, Hermes said.
