Feds allow Tesoro to restart ND pipeline

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — Tesoro Corp. says it has gotten permission from federal regulators to restart a pipeline that ruptured and spilled more than 20,000 barrels of oil in a North Dakota wheat field.

Tesoro announced the restart on Friday. The company says it has accepted a safety order from the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration that sets conditions to restart the pipeline.

A farmer discovered the spill in a wheat field in the northwest corner of the state in late September.

Tesoro says the damaged portion of the pipeline was removed and sent to an independent laboratory for analysis.

Federal regulators say a preliminary investigation shows a possible lightning strike might have caused the rupture.
