ND worker killed removing utility pole from ground

MINOT, N.D. (AP) — A worker pulling an old utility pole from the ground southwest of Minot was killed when it hit him in the head.

The Ward County Sheriff's Department says 24-year-old Lee Edward Helmers, of Bismarck, died at the scene of Monday's accident near the intersection of Highways 23 and 28.

The department says he and another worker were using a truck crane when a pole became too heavy for the machine to handle.

It was also windy at the time, so the pole slipped from the device, landed on the ground and the bottom part of the pole popped up and hit Helmers in the head.
