Man killed in Dunseith crash

A 20-year-old Belcourt, N.D., man was killed in a two-vehicle crash Friday on a gravel road near Dunseith, N.D, according to the North Dakota Highway Patrol.

The accident happened at 4:32 p.m. about 12 1/2 miles northeast of Dunseith.

Kevin Tjaden, 23, Belcourt, was driving a 1990 Geo Storm south on the gravel road. Passengers in the car were Joshua Jeanotte, 25, and Jarrod Azure, 20, both of Belcourt.

Shedlon Azure, 26, St. John, N.D., was driving a 1993 Dodge Ram 250 pickup truck north on the gravel road. He had a 17-year-old Belcourt boy as a passenger.

The patrol said the two vehicles met at the crest of a hill on the gravel road and struck each other. Both vehicles wound up in a ditch.

Jarrod Azure was pronounced dead at the scene, the patrol said.

Tjaden, who was injured, was transported by Rolla Ambulance to Presentation Medical Center in Rolla, then airlifted to Trinity Medical Center in Minot. Jeanotte was also injured and was transported to a hospital in Belcourt for treatment.

Jarrod Azure was wearing a seat belt, the patrol said. Tjaden was not wearing a seat belt; it was not known if Jeanotte was wearing seat belt. Sheldon Azure and his passenger wore their seat belts.

The Geo was totaled, and the Dodge received extensive front-end damage.

Sheldon Azure was cited for driving under suspension.

The patrol, Rolette County Sheriff’s Office, Turtle Mountain Bureau of Indian Affairs, Rolla Ambulance, Rolla Fire, St. John Fire and Dunseith Fire all responded to the scene.

The crash remains under investigation by the patrol.
