N.D. man gets 30 years in sex abuse case

A Devils Lake man previously convicted of murder has been sentenced to 30 years in prison for sexually abusing a girl at the Spirit Lake Indian Reservation, the U.S. Department of Justice said Tuesday.

Erick McKay, 40, pleaded guilty in November to two counts of abusive sexual contact with a minor younger than 12. He had forced her to have sexual contact with him by threatening to use force against her.

In 2002, McKay was convicted of killing his 7-week-old son, Erick McKay Jr. Autopsy results showed the baby died of injuries consistent with shaken-baby syndrome.

He was sentenced to 15 years in prison but was out on probation six years later, only to be imprisoned again for violating his probation by drinking.
