Oakes school locked down, man arrested in separate incident
Oakes Public School was locked down for more than an hour Wednesday after a person who is considered a “security risk” walked within one block of the school, according to Oakes Police Chief Mark Roberts
Roberts said Dale Smith Jr., 38, Oakes, was seen near the school Wednesday around 10:15 a.m. A warrant was out for Smith’s arrest for allegedly violating conditions of a bond from a previous charge. Roberts said Smith had allegedly made threats against the school in the past.
“The lockdown was a strictly cautionary measure taken by the school,” Roberts said. The school was locked down from around 10:20 to 11:30 a.m.
Roberts said Smith was arrested on the warrant and is lodged in the Barnes County Correctional Facility.
