Girl, 6, dies after being hit by pickup in Rolla, N.D.

BISMARCK – A 6-year-old girl was struck and killed by a pickup while riding her bicycle Tuesday in Rolla, N.D., the North Dakota Highway Patrol said.

The pickup was traveling westbound on U.S. Highway 281 when the girl rode across the highway from the north at about 6:25 p.m.

The driver was checking his rearview mirror and didn’t see the bicyclist crossing the road and was unable to avoid her, the patrol stated in a news release.

After the front end of the 2009 Chevy Colorado hit the girl, the driver pulled over to the side of the road.

The girl, whose name wasn’t released, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The patrol identified the pickup’s driver as 72-year-old Ronald Mackinnon of Rolla.

Rolla is about 75 miles northwest of Devils Lake.
