DeVries hired as VCSU AD

Jill DeVries, left, and Vanessa Keeler-Johnson.

Valley City State has a new AD, but it's a familiar face.

Jill DeVries, who has spent 17 of the last 18 years as the women's basketball coach for the Vikings, has been hired as the new athletic director.

DeVries replaces Nate Stewart, who left VCSU for a different job at Centre College (Ken.) after just one year.

DeVries is the school's all-time wins leader in women's basketball with a record of 283-258. She is the only coach to lead the Vikings to nationals.

Her replacement is Vanessa Keeler-Johnson, who had been the head coach at Detroit Lakes (Minn.) High School last season. Previously, she was an assistant coach for three years at Minnesota State University-Moorhead.

Keeler-Johnson, originally from Hartford, S.D., played two years of college basketball at both South Dakota State and the University of Sioux Falls, graduating from USF in 2013.
