The Jamestown Kiwanis Club and volunteers bagged 163,216 meals at the seventh annual Kids Against Hunger event Saturday morning.

Janna Bergstedt, an event co-chair, said Kiwanis exceeded its goal of packing 100,000 meal bags at the event at Stutsman Harley-Davidson.

“Having almost 400 people show up to volunteer, that was something,” she said.

Bergstedt said just about all the meals will be distributed by the Great Plains Food Bank in North Dakota, with some meals going to western Minnesota.

The meals consist of 21 vitamins and minerals and are made of rice, soy, dehydrated vegetables and chicken flavoring. Each bagged meal feeds six people and is ready to eat after boiling water is added. One bagged meal costs $1.50, including the food and packaging.

Don Bentz is a Jamestown Kiwanis Club member and was instrumental in getting the event started in Jamestown, according to Katie Ryan-Anderson, Kiwanis Club member. He and his wife, Joyce, have been foster parents to more than 70 children and they know what it looks like when a child goes hungry.

“It is amazing how many kids are in need, that are actually starving, in need of food,” he said. “We have the resources, we have the volunteers, so we decided to do this, to package the food.”

Bergstedt said 375 volunteers participated in this year’s Kids Against Hunger. She said she is always amazed at the diversity of people who volunteer for the event.

“We have young, we have old, we have business people, we have retired people,” she said. “What other cause would have this variety of people coming together to help feed hungry people?”
