Bravo to Smith

The Jamestown Sun hands out these bravos and buffalo chip this week:

• Bravo to Rob "Robla" Pope from Liverpool, England, who is raising funds for the World Wildlife Fund and Peace Direct by running across the United States multiple times. He stopped in Jamestown during his third run across the U.S. Pope said he got the inspiration to run across America after watching the movie "Forrest Gump." Pope has raised about $20,000 so far.

• Buffalo chip that 2016 was the hottest year on record, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. A report released Thursday said long-term global warming and a strong El Nino early in the year led to record heat, NOAA said.

• Bravo to the 100th anniversary of Red Willow Lake Resort and Pavillion. The small lakeside resort was the site for many young people to play softball and baseball and attend concerts and dances through the years.

• Bravo to Ben Smith, head coach of the Jamestown High School swimming and diving team, who placed first recently in the 400-meter individual medley in his age bracket in the U.S. Masters Swimming Summer National Championship at the University of Minnesota.
