08/28/2008 12:00 AM Golden State guard Monta Ellis will be sidelined for at least three months after severely spraining his ankle during an offseason workout, forcing the Warriors to start the season without the player expected to lead their revamped roster this fall.

08/28/2008 12:00 AM Patience paid off for the Colorado Avalanche, who signed Joe Sakic to a one-year, $6 million contract Wednesday after he decided to play a 20th season in the NHL rather than call it a career.
“Ultimately it came down to the fact that I still enjoy playing and competing,” the 39-year-old captain said in a statement released by the team. “I’m comfortable with my conditioning and my overall health. I’m ready for the start of camp and am looking forward to the upcoming season.”
08/28/2008 12:00 AM Knowing how many steps must happen in perfect order to throw out a runner from the outfield, Minnesota’s Denard Span wasn’t the least bit surprised to see Tug Hulett being sent toward home.
Fortunately for the slumping Twins, Span was perfect.
“I can see why so many third-base coaches send runners,” Span said. “The chances of a perfect throw are very slim. It was one of those times it hit (catcher Mike Redmond) right in the chest.”
08/28/2008 12:00 AM Marion Barber holds up his left arm and points at his wrist, absent a watch, as a way to indicate that he doesn’t have time to talk. He then leaves the locker room.
The running back known as “Marion the Barbarian” because of his hard-charging, take-on-anybody approach on the field remains an elusive interview subject despite his new role as a starter for the Dallas Cowboys.
08/28/2008 12:00 AM Several years ago, ESPN attempted to ram down our throats a show called “The Life.”
As with all non-sports ESPN shows, I gave the program as much attention as I do say, the X-Games — zero. One night, however, I came across an episode featuring Shaquille O’Neal. While driving down the road, on a perfect southern California day, O’Neal’s Hoop-D, worth more than my crib — sorry, my house — blew a tire as he drove down I-5.

08/28/2008 12:00 AM Two bunts, one double and nine well-pitched innings. The Chicago Cubs proved on a Wrigley Field-like day they can win when their bats aren’t booming, and their by-the-textbook victory came before they begin what may be their toughest stretch all season.
08/28/2008 12:00 AM Mike Krzyzewski always maintained that leading the U.S. Olympic basketball team would make him a changed coach. Sure enough, Coach K was there on the sideline in Beijing and he stopped himself from saying something he otherwise might have.
“Most of the time I was there,” Krzyzewski said, “I was mic’ed.”
That’s not all that’s different about the post-Olympic Krzyzewski, who’s settling in back at Duke.
08/28/2008 12:00 AM Jelena Jankovic’s leg cramped so badly, she couldn’t take another step.

An MRI on Sunday showed that Umenyiora tore the lateral meniscus in his left knee in a preseason game against the archrival Jets on Saturday night.

Yep, it was gold — the color the Americans always used to win but hadn’t since 2000.
08/25/2008 12:00 AM The umpires didn’t need instant replay to reverse a home run call this time because it was so obvious.
The Los Angeles Angels did need an eighth-inning rally and Francisco Rodriguez’s 50th save to beat the Minnesota Twins, however.
Vladimir Guerrero tied the score with an RBI triple in the eighth and Gary Matthews Jr. drove him in with another three-base hit two batters later, helping the Angels win 5-3 on Sunday to earn a split of the four-game series.

08/23/2008 12:00 AM From the moment he first stepped on the practice field with the Minnesota Vikings, Mike Tomlin made his presence felt.

08/22/2008 12:00 AM The University of North Dakota football team’s first-year offensive coordinator is not planning many changes.
“The main course meal will be the same,” Greg Breitenbach said. “I just plan to put some salt and pepper on it. The method is tried-and-true.”
That was especially true a year ago, when the Sioux set school season records for total yards, touchdowns and a 40.7 point-per-game scoring average.
08/22/2008 12:00 AM They came to the Beijing Olympics as a team trying to find its way, still adjusting to a new coach and each other, still smarting from a loss that brought humiliation on and off the field.
They dropped their first game, hardly an auspicious start for a country that had lost only one other in three Olympics. But bit by bit, game by game, they came together, figuring out what it would take to win.
08/22/2008 12:00 AM Gene Upshaw had his critics, but his success as an NFL player and later the union’s boss was also apparent. 08/22/2008 12:00 AM U.S. women’s softball and U.S. women’s beach volleyball, two sure things at the Olympics.

08/21/2008 12:00 AM For a volleyball team, needing to replace a starting setter can be as difficult a proposition as a football team breaking in a new quarterback or a basketball team turning to a new point guard.
The setter is the on-court leader who directs the offense and gets the ball in position for other players to score points. Breaking in a new starter can be nerve-wracking for a coach.

08/21/2008 12:00 AM This is what goes down as a “tough test” for the U.S. squad of NBA All-Stars: A five-point lead in the second quarter that turned to 12 by halftime ... and was never close again.
“Sooner or later we’ll impose our will,” U.S. point guard Chris Paul said. “I don’t know if you can keep up with us for 40 minutes.”
08/21/2008 12:00 AM St. Louis Rams running back Steven Jackson ended his holdout on Wednesday while his agent continues negotiations for a new contract.
The 235-pound Jackson, a bruising runner and the centerpiece of the team’s offense, is entering the final year of a five-year, $7 million deal he signed as a first-round pick in 2004. His prolonged stand perhaps reflected a realization of his value to an attack that averaged only 16 points last season while going 3-13.
08/21/2008 12:00 AM The New England Patriots played poorly on offense in their first exhibition game. The offense and defense were shaky in the second game.
It’s only the preseason, so there are no signs of panic in their locker room, even with Tom Brady limited by a foot injury. Yet a team that was a perfect 18-0 before losing the Super Bowl certainly doesn’t like the trend.
08/21/2008 12:00 AM NASCAR’s latest attempt to reel in the rule-breakers aimed at an unfamiliar target: the normally squeaky-clean Joe Gibbs Racing.
NASCAR’s decision Wednesday to suspend seven JGR crew members indefinitely for attempting to manipulate a horsepower test after a Nationwide Series race last weekend put a serious dent in owner Joe Gibbs’ reputation
