Warriors star Ellis to miss three months

08/28/2008 12:00 AM
Golden State guard Monta Ellis will be sidelined for at least three months after severely spraining his ankle during an offseason workout, forcing the Warriors to start the season without the player expected to lead their revamped roster this fall. Ellis, who got a six-year contract extension worth $66 million on July 24, sprained his ankle and tore a deltoid ligament while working out in his hometown of Jackson, Miss., last Thursday, said Chris Mullin, the Warriors’ top basketball executive.

08/28/2008 12:00 AM
Patience paid off for the Colorado Avalanche, who signed Joe Sakic to a one-year, $6 million contract Wednesday after he decided to play a 20th season in the NHL rather than call it a career. “Ultimately it came down to the fact that I still enjoy playing and competing,” the 39-year-old captain said in a statement released by the team. “I’m comfortable with my conditioning and my overall health. I’m ready for the start of camp and am looking forward to the upcoming season.”

Twins snap skid

08/28/2008 12:00 AM
Knowing how many steps must happen in perfect order to throw out a runner from the outfield, Minnesota’s Denard Span wasn’t the least bit surprised to see Tug Hulett being sent toward home. Fortunately for the slumping Twins, Span was perfect. “I can see why so many third-base coaches send runners,” Span said. “The chances of a perfect throw are very slim. It was one of those times it hit (catcher Mike Redmond) right in the chest.”

The running back known as “Marion the Barbarian” because of his hard-charging, take-on-anybody approach on the field remains an elusive interview subject despite his new role as a starter for the Dallas Cowboys.

A day in the life

08/28/2008 12:00 AM
Several years ago, ESPN attempted to ram down our throats a show called “The Life.” As with all non-sports ESPN shows, I gave the program as much attention as I do say, the X-Games — zero. One night, however, I came across an episode featuring Shaquille O’Neal. While driving down the road, on a perfect southern California day, O’Neal’s Hoop-D, worth more than my crib — sorry, my house — blew a tire as he drove down I-5.

Coack K relishing gold, win

08/28/2008 12:00 AM
Mike Krzyzewski always maintained that leading the U.S. Olympic basketball team would make him a changed coach. Sure enough, Coach K was there on the sideline in Beijing and he stopped himself from saying something he otherwise might have. “Most of the time I was there,” Krzyzewski said, “I was mic’ed.” That’s not all that’s different about the post-Olympic Krzyzewski, who’s settling in back at Duke.

It’s going to be great,” Smith said.

Jimmies ready for new season

08/21/2008 12:00 AM
For a volleyball team, needing to replace a starting setter can be as difficult a proposition as a football team breaking in a new quarterback or a basketball team turning to a new point guard. The setter is the on-court leader who directs the offense and gets the ball in position for other players to score points. Breaking in a new starter can be nerve-wracking for a coach.

Jackson ends holdout

08/21/2008 12:00 AM
St. Louis Rams running back Steven Jackson ended his holdout on Wednesday while his agent continues negotiations for a new contract. The 235-pound Jackson, a bruising runner and the centerpiece of the team’s offense, is entering the final year of a five-year, $7 million deal he signed as a first-round pick in 2004. His prolonged stand perhaps reflected a realization of his value to an attack that averaged only 16 points last season while going 3-13.

No panic in Patriots camp

08/21/2008 12:00 AM

It’s only the preseason, so there are no signs of panic in their locker room, even with Tom Brady limited by a foot injury. Yet a team that was a perfect 18-0 before losing the Super Bowl certainly doesn’t like the trend.
