05/15/2008 12:00 AM It came before the flood of calls to T.J. Oshie’s cell phone Tuesday afternoon — a simple welcome to the National Hockey League from one of the league’s best.
Calder Trophy finalist Jonathan Toews sent Oshie, his former UND teammate and linemate, a quick text message just before Oshie officially joined in him the big leagues.

05/15/2008 12:00 AM New Minnesota Wild owner Craig Leipold held his breath while coach Jacques Lemaire weighed his hunger to return against a desire to retire.
As for Doug Risebrough? Leipold didn’t sound at all worried about losing his general manager, quashing curiosity whether Risebrough would listen if the once-proud Toronto Maple Leafs made a pitch for him to fill their GM vacancy.

05/15/2008 12:00 AM Hold on, NFL. Spygate isn’t over. Not if the “incensed” Pittsburgh Steelers fan in Congress has anything to do with it.
Sen. Arlen Specter on Wednesday called for an independent investigation of the New England Patriots’ taping of opposing coaches’ signals, possibly similar to the high-profile Mitchell Report on performance enhancing drugs in baseball.
05/15/2008 12:00 AM Ryan Zimmerman homered and Tim Redding pitched two-hit ball for six innings, sending the Washington Nationals to a 5-3 victory over the New York Mets Wednesday.
05/15/2008 12:00 AM Jay Payton hit his fourth career grand slam to back a gritty pitching effort by Daniel Cabrera, and the Baltimore Orioles rallied to beat the Boston Red Sox 6-3 Wednesday for a two-game sweep.
Solo homers by Jason Varitek and Mike Lowell, and a defensive gem by Manny Ramirez — yes, Manny Ramirez — weren’t enough to prevent the Red Sox from losing their fourth straight. It was the third consecutive game in which Boston blew a three-run lead.

05/15/2008 12:00 AM Detroit’s goal with a guy barely in the crease, if at all, didn’t count. Dallas’ goal with a guy clearly in the crease did count.
Apparently, that’s what it takes to slow the mighty Red Wings.
Loui Ericksson’s goal about 12 minutes after Detroit’s was waved off, then third-period goals from Mike Modano and Brenden Morrow sent the Stars past the Red Wings 3-1 on Wednesday night, preventing the Western Conference finals from ending in a sweep.

Just two years ago, the two teams combined for 49 runs and 63 hits in three games, 15 of which went over the fence.

Eller, 19, was the 13th pick of the 2007 draft.

05/13/2008 12:00 AM Call them a dying breed, the lone rangers, the few, the proud — whatever.
College baseball players from North Dakota are becoming a rare commodity, especially the ones who are legitimate contributors. Not just the token warm body or two along for the ride.
Jamestown College has been one of the rare schools to continually find area kids who can play and thrive, and this year is no different.
05/13/2008 12:00 AM Three Jamestown College baseball players have been named to the all-Region III baseball team.

05/12/2008 12:00 AM The Utah Jazz had plenty of chances to crumble and nearly did.
They let a 12-point slip away in the last four minutes and faced overtime against league MVP Kobe Bryant and the Los Angeles Lakers. Instead of wilting, Utah played its toughest defense of the playoffs and pulled out a 123-115 victory on Sunday, tying the Western Conference semifinals 2-2.
The Jazz held the Lakers to two field goals in overtime and went 9-for-9 from the foul line while outscoring the Lakers 15-7.
05/12/2008 12:00 AM Kyle Busch is NASCAR’s most hated driver. And he loves it.
Viciously booed during pre-race introductions, Busch soaked up the venom by encouraging Saturday night’s crowd at Darlington Raceway to keep it coming. And when he heard a member of Dale Earnhardt Jr.’s crew jeer him as he passed by on the parade lap, Busch smugly flipped him the bird.
This kid doesn’t need to be popular, not as long as he’s winning races.
“I don’t care. I’m here to race. I’m here to win,” Busch said. “If I win, it just makes ‘em more upset and crying on their way home.”
05/12/2008 12:00 AM Weston Dressler picked up his degree in management Saturday during UND’s graduation ceremonies in the Alerus Center.
His graduation stroll perhaps was the only time Dressler was seen walking in the Alerus Center since he arrived on the UND campus four years ago. The former Sioux wide receiver spent most of his days in the Alerus Center burning opposing defensive backs for big gains.
05/12/2008 12:00 AM Sunday at Sawgrass felt tougher on Sergio Garcia than what he faced last summer at the British Open, a playoff loss that seemed to define a career filled with more talent than trophies.

05/10/2008 12:00 AM A decisive resolution to Friday night’s game between Jamestown and Minot at Rotary Soccer Field would have pretty much cemented both teams’ postseason fate.
A win likely would have sent the Blue Jays to state later this month, and likewise for the Majettes. Instead, the teams played to a 2-all tie with most of the good stuff over the final 20 minutes.
05/10/2008 12:00 AM A Super Regionals berth is very close now.

Malkin, who is only 21 but is the leading scorer in the playoffs with 17 points following a three-point night, scored with 6.5 seconds left in the first period with a tired Flyers line on the ice to put Pittsburgh up 3-2.
05/10/2008 12:00 AM Hot blasts of wind on a diabolical course made The Players Championship tough enough to turn someone’s hair gray. Not that the leaders needed any help with that Friday.
Kenny Perry, who first showed up at Sawgrass 20 years ago, kept his wits and his patience in 35 mph gusts and made only one bogey in a solid round of 2-under 70 that gave him a one-shot lead at 6 under going into the weekend.
05/09/2008 12:00 AM Mayville State used the long ball to take the lead.

05/09/2008 12:00 AM With the location of their West Region doubleheader switched from Bismarck to Jamestown due to rain in the central part of the state, Jamestown High School and St. Mary’s split Thursday.

This is nothing new with Garcia, who rarely struggles to make solid contact.
05/09/2008 12:00 AM Paul Pierce and Ray Allen found their shooting touch. LeBron James can only hope he left his in Cleveland.
