JHS beats Bismarck:Blue Jays inch closer to first West Region top seed

Jamestown has hardly had its back against the wall this season.

The Blue Jays experienced a taste of it on Thursday night.

Bismarck High tied that match at one game apiece and led the third game 24-23 before a Jamestown rally secured it en route to a West?Region victory at Bismarck High School.

Game scores were 25-14, 21-25, 26-24 and 25-15.

The Blue?Jays (13 region, 27-3 overall) won their 19th match in a row and can lock down the No. 1 seed for the West Region tournament with at Bismarck?Century on Tuesday night. It would mark the first regular-season conference title for Jamestown. The region tournament is scheduled for Nov. 14-16 at the JHS?gym.

Jamestown coach Sara Hegerle acknowledged that Tuesday is not just another match.

"I don't think we'll approach it that way," she said. "It's not just another match; it's to win the conference. If we can't handle that kind of pressure, how would we handle it if we ever made it to the state finals?"

On this night, the first and last games weren't near as competitive as the two in the middle.

Josie Hegerle's block capped six straight points that ended game 1.

The Blue?Jays lost only their fourth region game of the season in game 2, getting to within one at 22-21 before the Demons closed it out with three straight points.

The turning point in the match came in game 3, when the Blue Jays, who trailed by three at 20-17 and one at 24-23, got a block from McKayla Keller to tie the match. A hitting error and a Hegerle block paved way for the 2-1 match lead. The Blue Jays weren't tested in game 4.

Sara Hegerle praised the team's defensive effort, as they posted an astounding 139 digs, led by senior McKayla Orr's 39.?Josie Hegerle added 23 and Meghan Orr had 22.

"There were some hard-hit balls and our kids were diving every way,"?Sara Hegerle said.

Senior Addie Eamon had a big match, finishing with 19 kils and three blocks. Josie Hegerle, also a senior, added 12 kills, 30 assists, three blocks and two aces. Sara Hegerle said it was a win clearly led by the seniors.

"All three of our seniors had the best games they've had this year," Sara Hegerle said, referring to Eamon, Josie Hegerle and McKayla Orr. "They're the kind of kids that step up under the best competition, which is exactly where we want to be. That trio is something else."
