Blue Jays fall to Deacons at state

FARGO -- Jamestown High School ran out of steam against Fargo Shanley on Thursday in the quarterfinals of the Class A state volleyball tournament.

After jumping out to a commanding 2-0 lead in the match, the Deacons stormed all the way back to defeat the Blue Jays 3-2. Jamestown (26-14) will face West Fargo (22-15) today at noon in consolation play.

Shanley cruised in the deciding fifth set against Jamestown. Junior middle hitter Caira Berg posted four of her 19 kills and scored the Deacons’ only ace of the match, as Shanley rolled 15-4 in the final game.

Jamestown sophomore Courtney Peterson scored three of the Blue Jays’ four points in the fifth via kill. The Blue Jays won the first two games 25-18 and 26-24, while the Deacons took games three and four by the scores of 25-18, 25-23.

Mackenzie Clark led the Blue Jays with 18 kills, while Megan Gaffaney finished with 47 assists and Hannah Schiele posted 26 digs. Jamestown scored 10 ace serves in the match.

Shanley was led by Katie Roberts with 20 kills and 26 digs. Berg finished with 19 kills and Julia Vetter tossed up a match-high 53 assists.

Shanley (27-9) will meet defending state champion Bismarck Century (39-2) in the state semifinals tomorrow at 6 p.m.
