Arellano in All-American contention

Kaiann Arellano turned in a stellar performance on Thursday.

The junior from Jamestown scored a third-place total of 2,937 points in the heptathlon at the NAIA national meet in Gulf Shores, Ala.

Arellano won the 100-meter hurdles in a PR of (14.89) and was second in the high jump (5-5 3/4). She also had PRs in the shot put (32-0 1/4) and 200 meters (26.56). Arellano entered the competition ranked 15th out of 16. The top eight finishers earn All-American honors.

"Kaiann had a monumental day," Jimmie women's track and field coach Jim Clark said. "She really put herself in great position with terrific performances ... the field is all really close and Kaiann is going to have to be on her game (today)."

The competition concludes with the long jump, javelin and 800. Arellano is also qualified in the open high jump and 100 hurdles.

The leader has 3,062 points. Second sits at 3,009. Eighth-place has 2,784.
